Gosper and Elkies
Yesterday I had the privilege of meeting Bill Gosper and watching him demonstrate various fascinating configurations of John Conway's Game of Life. I first came across Gosper's name in Steven Levy's Hackers, and later in my computer algebra course, where we learned about his work on continued fractions.
As I was leaving he mentioned musical mathematician Noam Elkies. Dave Rusin maintains a site on Mathematics and Music. Gosper, on the other hand, is known for his "visual hacks"---mathematics and art, more or less.
